The TC220 was the entry level Talman model in the 90s. Today, they are actually kind of hard to find, they don't show up for sale as often as other models.
I tend to think of this as the "Les Paul JR" of the vintage Talman world.
Some of the unique features only found on this model compared to other vintage Talmans:
- Straight angle headstock (closer in design to the modern re-issue Talmans!)
- Skunk-stripe on back of neck
- No amber tint on neck or headstock
- String retaining bar
- 6-screw bridge
- Body edges more square
- AANJ (All-Access neck joint) more square
- Rear cover has rounded edges and 6 individual string holes
- Uncovered pickups (white)
This specific guitar is very, very clean! There's minimal to no fret wear. Only light surface scratches and swirls on the body and hardware.
It's common to find these guitars with heavily yellowed pickup covers (and other plastic parts), but the plastic on this guitar is still white! Everything (besides trem arm) is unmodified, 100% original! Considering its age and that it was not a high-end, sought after model, this guitar is unbelievable!
Comes with a soft gig bag and (non-original) tremolo arm!
Setup:
- clean and polish hardware
- polish frets
- clean and oil fretboard (Nomad F-ONE)
- Nomad TUNE-IT lubricant on nut and saddles
- D'Addario 10-46 strings
- original (plastic) nut, slot depths are OK
- adjusted truss rod, neck relief to .011" (.279mm)
- deoxidize all electronics
- string height and pickup heights adjusted
- intonation adjusted
- carnauba wax on body
String heights @12th (hold 1st):
- E 1.5mm
- A 1.75mm
- D 2mm
- G 2mm
- B 1.75mm
- e 1.5mm
Pickup heights:
- Neck: low side 3mm, high side 2.6mm
- Bridge: low side 2.5mm, high side 2.1mm
Blemishes:
- There are light scratches and swirls all over the paint and hardware. They can only really be seen in reflected light. In person everything looks nice, clean and shiny.
- 2 very small indentions in paint. One front. One rear. Can only be seen in reflected light. They are so light, I wouldn't even call them dents.
- The pickguard has playing wear / scratches.
- Some tarnishing on pickguard screws
- The nut slot depths are ok for clearance on the first fret. There's no problems with playability or tuning stability, but I wanted to mention the low E string slot is slightly too deep (compared to factory original). Someone had larger strings on it at some point. The deeper slot plus the retaining bar is pushing it down at a steep angle where it's lightly touching the wood above the nut.
Note, I'm just being thorough here. Overall I'd still rate this guitar excellent condition!
